Usage rights

The shoot creates the images. The booking also needs to say what the client can do with them.

Break usage into five pieces: client or product, media, territory, term and any exclusivity. “Worldwide social for six months” and “worldwide all media” are not the same deal even when they use the same photograph.

Buyout

Buyout by itself is not a complete set of terms. Ask what it covers. Select London’s public booking conditions deal separately with permitted use, additional use, territory and renewal — which shows how much information can sit behind one fee.

Renewal

When a term ends, a campaign may stop or be renewed. Do not assume a new run is included merely because the client already has the files.

Market matters

France, for example, has a collective framework that distinguishes work remuneration from remuneration for exploitation of a model’s image. Other markets structure payment differently. Read the agreement and rules that apply to the actual job rather than importing a number from another country.

Synthetic or AI-related use now deserves its own line of checking when it is contemplated. Do not infer it from a broad permission to publish; look for language that actually addresses the intended use.
